Fiona Raglan’s company, Dipsticks Research Ltd, works for a string of international clients including Suzuki, The BBC and Yell, not from a big city HQ but from rural Hexham, North East England.
She was a co-founder of Dipsticks Research in 1997 and the business now employs 38 full time staff at its headquarters in Allendale, 90 people at its telephone centre in Hexham and 600 fieldwork specialists across the country.
In 2003 Fiona became managing director of Dipsticks and in the same year she was the winner of the Best Rural Woman Entrepreneur at the North East Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
Dipsticks now has three divisions which address different areas of the research market including Public Knowledge which is a specialist market research agency providing information and insight for public sector and third sector organisations.

The historic market town of Hexham is one of the most picturesque towns in North East England and was recently voted England’s Favourite Market Town by readers of Country Life magazine.
The fantastic Hexham Abbey is at the heart of the town and dates back to the 7th century and its Saxon crypt can still be seen. Other historic buildings include the Old Gaol, the oldest purpose-built gaol in England, which houses the Border History Museum, and the Moothall, which was once the administrative centre for the medieval County of Hexhamshire, controlled by the Bishop of York.
Hexham still has a bustling market every Tuesday as well as a popular Farmers’ Market on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. Its winding, cobbled streets are lined with independent and high street shops as well as cafés and restaurants.
Known as the capital of Tynedale, the town is also only a stone’s throw from Hadrian’s Wall with regular buses taking tourists to and from the town.
